Bloco Nove is the result of a Brazilian musical seed planted long ago in Southern California. Combining creativity and tradition with an edge, this group brings something exciting and different to LA’s musical landscape. Featuring a collective of rotating members and performers and led by Long Beach’s Bobby Easton (Delta Nove, Samba Society, Long Beach Funk Fest) and co-led by Simon Carroll (Delta Nove, Samba Society, Marbella) this group promises to shake things up with a high energy Carnaval set.
Multi-instrumentalist, band leader, and producer Bobby Easton has been deeply involved in the Brazilian community of Southern California for close to 2 decades. His passion for Brazilian music and capoeira was fueled by several extended trips to Brazil. He has led many batucada groups, has taught Brazilian drums in elementary, middle and high schools, and has led workshops at various national universities. He has performed and/or recorded with Ozomatli, Beck, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, George Clinton, Dr. John, Tonho Materia, and Mangueira samba school. He also is founder and leader of the Southern California world funk band Delta Nove and is founder and producer of the highly successful Long Beach Funk Fest.
Renowned multi-percussionist and drumset player Simon Carroll is equally at home in a hot, sweaty Brazilian batucada or a fine trained classical orchestra. He received a BA in Orchestral Percussion and Composition at Cal State University Northridge.
He has studied music on extensive trips to Brazil and Cuba with master percussionists. Simon performs regularly with many of LA’s Brazilian bands, including Samba Society, Mar Bella, Batukaxe, and more. He also has tours internationally with the Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, recently headlined by John Malcovich. He has performed with Van Halen, Alex Acuna, American Idol, and more.
Bobby Easton and Simon Carroll first played together in LA based traditional samba band Samba Society in 2009. Since then the two have played together in a variety of settings, from nationally touring band Delta Nove to Samba Society, shows with Van Halen, Ozomatli at the Hollywood Bowl, the official Grammy after party in 2012, and countless other high profile settings.
Bloco Nove will be bringing an exciting high energy Carnaval set to Club Nokia, with a lot of Bahian flavor. Their set will feature songs from Timbalada and Carlinhos Brown, from Brazilian soul and MPB legend Tim Maia, as well as many other gems and surprises. Along with the music, the set will also incorporate elements of capoeira from members of Capoeira Batuque.
Bloco Nove at Club Nokia will feature the great Katia Moraes, a mainstay on the Southern California Brazilian scene, renowned bay area singer Destani ‘Destino’ Wolf, and new arrival from Sao Paulo Brazil, Fabio Santana de Souza. In addition there will be Capoeira Batuque teachers and musicians Dana Maman and Phillipos Haile, and members of Delta Nove, Dominic Feedam, Viking, Fingers, and Rob Covacevich, plus DJ Marlon Fuentes to top it off. Get ready for Bloco Nove to bring Carnaval to you!
